Description
The painter went down in history as the ‘Painter of the King’s Conquests’, thanks to his prestigious collaboration with Charles Le Brun at the court of Louis XIV on the tapestries representing the History of King Louis XIV.
The fame that this commission brought him also enabled him to establish himself as a painter of battles, an iconographic genre that was very popular in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands.
This painting with its unusual, almost square format reflects this phase of the artist’s production, all of which was intended for commercial purposes: in fact, the scene depicted is not related to a particular historical event.
The authorship is confirmed by a label on the back of the panel, which, although not autograph, is from the same period as the painting. This war scene is authenticated by Prof. Giancarlo Sestrieri.
Oil on panel, dimensions int. 11,8×12,2, ext. 14,5×14,5 in.
