Description

Important etching from a drawing by Jean Louis Desprez (Auxerre 1743 – Stockholm 1804). A watercoloured specimen is now in the British Museum in London; there is an inscription at the bottom: ‘La grotta di Posillipo, cio? via sotterranea scavata nel vivo sasso per la lunghezza di pi? di due stadj fra Napoli e Pozzuolo pratticata dagli antichi per comodo della via littorale ad evitar la salita del monte’.At the bottom are the signatures ‘L. Despres del. – Cav. Franc. Piranesi inc. 1791’. Flaws present, unframed. Etching, dimensions 30.7×21.6 in.
