Description

Auction N.14 – Lot 115

Jacques Courtois, called il Borgognone (Saint-Hyppolite 1621 – Rome 1676), ambit of, Battle Scene

The unknown artist was certainly influenced by the French painter in his production of ‘bird’s eye’ battles.

Borgognone had a lively following in Rome thanks to his skill as a landscape painter and the vaguely Nordic rendering of his soldiers.

Here, the painter imitates the realism and romantic fervour of the better-known battler, while also taking up his peculiar view of the wide valley.

Oil on canvas, dimensions ext. 22×27,1, int. 18,1×23,62 in.
