Description

Auction N.14 – Lot 107

Christian Berentz (Hamburg 1658- 1722 Rome), A pair of large still lifes with two young men and fruit

The painter examined here is one of the few naturamortists mentioned in Lione Pascoli’s ‘Lives of Modern Painters, Sculptors and Architects’, published in 1736. After an apprenticeship in his home town, he moved to Rome after 1680.

According to Pascoli, he was also in the service of Marquis Niccol? Maria Pallavicini together with Carlo Maratta and Franz Werner von Tamm.

The painter’s authorship can be traced back to the freshness and great naturalism in the rendering of the plants and fruit, particularly the open ones.

In the canvas with the young woman there is an echo of the painter’s collaboration with Carlo Maratta.

Oil on canvas, dimensions ext. 76,1×57,4 int. 66,9×47,4 in.
