Giuseppe Cellini (Rome 1855 – 1940), Triptych with celebratory wings, gift of the city of Rome to French President ?mile Loubet in 1904
This visually striking triptych was executed by the Roman artist on commission of the city’s committee of honour – made up of artists and nobles of the capital – whose names appear on the six panels surrounding the great allegory.
The central panel consists of a large allegory of peace, and underneath is a dedication to French President Émile Loubet who visited Rome in 1904, dictated by the poet Enrico Panzacchi. Loubet was president from 1899 to 1906 and his trip to the Italian capital was fundamental to the relaxation of political and colonial relations between the two nations.
The two side panels depict the friendship of the two nations: two allegories of Paris and Rome carry two children holding olive branches.
The triptych was displayed in the public shop in Corso Umberto I in Rome, and the event is documented in great detail in numerous publications of the time.
Dimensions when closed 53,1×34,6×4,3, when opened 53,1×56,6×1,7 in.
