Description

The French architect and painter frequented the neoclassical milieu of Mengs, Winckelmann and Adam; winner of the Prix de Rome in architecture, he was a boarder of the French Academy in 1749.

He worked in Rome for Cardinal Albani, in London with Robert Adam and in St Petersburg for Catherine II, who bought his 18 albums of drawings of Ancient Rome.

This elegant pair of landscapes is animated by a series of architectures, some fictional, some taken from antiquity such as the Pyramid of Cestius and the Colosseum.

Oil on canvas, dimensions ext. 57,8×43,7, int.38,5×52,7 in. each
