Auction N.14 – Lot 004
Sebastiano Ricci (Belluno 1659 – Venice 1734), attr. to, Cain and Abel
The subject of the Old Testament is illustrated with great impressiveness and essentiality by the painter from Belluno, with particular attention paid to the monumental anatomy of the two characters.
Cain, seated in the foreground, is depicted meditating on the murder of his brother Abel, shown frontally kneeling by the fire.
This painting seems to belong to the period the painter spent in Bologna: the scenographic compositions of Venetian painting give way here to a more intimate and meditated representation, with vigorous and plastic tones.
Oil on canvas, dimensions ext. 81,8×59,6, int. 73,6×51,1 in.
